The Johari Window - Model for Enhancing Self-Awareness and Competence

The Johari Window is a group analysis model developed by American psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in the 1950s. This model aims to help groups or individuals gain a better understanding of themselves and improve social relationships by increasing awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses. The Johari Window 🪟 consists of four quadrants, each representing a different area of personal awareness.

The first quadrant is the "Open Area" 🌟. This represents aspects of oneself that are well understood and also recognized by others. For example, if you are friendly and have good leadership skills, this is something that others can perceive and you are aware of it yourself. The Open Area is where natural communication and interaction between individuals occur.


The second quadrant is the "Hidden Area" 🤫. This includes aspects of oneself that are known to the individual but not shared with others. It may include dreams, deep thoughts, or latent skills that have not been openly expressed. The reasons for keeping this area hidden may include fear, hesitation, or personal reasons.

The third quadrant is the "Blind Area" 🙈. This refers to aspects of oneself that are not recognized by the individual but are visible to others. Others can perceive certain characteristics, behaviors, or issues that the individual may not be aware of. For example, you may have a tendency to procrastinate, which you may not realize, but your friends or colleagues can see it and point it out to you.


The fourth quadrant is the "Unknown Area" 🌌. This represents aspects of oneself that are neither known to the individual nor to others. It includes untapped potential, talents, or abilities that have yet to be discovered. Through self-exploration and experiences, these aspects can become part of the Open Area.


The Johari Window 🪟 model can be applied in various fields and offers many benefits. For individuals, it helps enhance self-awareness, improve communication skills, and build better relationships with others. For groups, it fosters trust, enhances understanding, and promotes teamwork.

To enhance self-awareness and competence, you can apply the Johari Window model by:

  1. Self-assessment: Ask yourself questions and identify the aspects that you are aware of and unaware of about yourself. Be thorough and honest with yourself.

  2. Feedback: Seek feedback from others about aspects of yourself that you may not be aware of or uncertain about. Accept feedback with an open mind and without feeling vulnerable.

  3. Exploration: Explore and develop new aspects of yourself. Try new experiences, learn, and broaden your horizons.

  4. Self-development: Set goals to develop and strengthen your areas of competence. Read books, participate in courses, or work with experienced individuals to gain new knowledge and skills.
